COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course offers a general introduction on the practices of global governance in contemporary politics, stressing the role played by a number of supranational actors: governmental international organizations, NGOs, Think-tanks, multi-national interest groups, etc. A particular attention will be paid to the role of European Union institutions and practices, both considering the European Union internal “arenas” for the development of new modes of negotiations among domestic and sub-national actors, but also looking to the modes of interaction between the EU as unitary actor and external bodies/communities.
COURSE ORGANIZATION
In order to fulfill the assignments required for this course, students will have to acquire an good knowledge of the fundamental theories of European integration, to command the basic rules of the current European Union scenario, and finally to be familiar to the literature on economic and political globalization and to the notion of multi-level governance.
Grading will be determined by the following:
CLASS MATERIAL
All readings for the sessions, homework assignments, data sets, overhead projector slides used during the lectures, and an assortment of links to other political science research sites will be made available and circulated by the instructor. All students attending class must have a functioning email address and check it regularly.

Grading will be determined by the following:
- Participation in class and discussion on weekly readings [20% total].
- Short presentations in class of research article. This presentation will be done in turn by all the students and it will warm up the weekly discussion [30% total].
- A term paper to be produced to cover a specific topic within the literature presented during the course or, alternatively, an empirical paper elaborating systematically and interpreting the data on a given aspect of a phenomenon correlated to the arguments discussed in class. This is the major requirement for this module. This work will be presented in written form. [50% total]
